General Information

Situated on the banks of Sabarmati River, Ahmedabad is the 6th largest city in India. In conversational Gujarati language, the city is popularly called “Amdavad”. Founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411, Ahmedabad then served as the Gujarat Sultanate's capital.

General information on Ahmedabad reveals that the city gained immense prominence as the commercial capital after the creation of Gujarat in 1960. Characterized by increasing population and a construction boom, Ahmedabad is developing as a centre of learning, Science, information technology etc. A thriving traditional culture is enjoyed by the city of with the popularity of Gujarati culture and varied traditions of various religious communities.

Civic administration

The civic administration of Ahmedabad is vested in the hands of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Some other regions which surround the city are under the administration of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). Executive powers are administered by the municipal commissioner, an IAS officer who is appointed by the state government of Gujarat. The mayor looks after the daily operation of the municipal school board, the municipal hospital, bus service in the city and the city library. The Police Commissioner heads the city police, Ahmedabad.


The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport which serves as both the international and the domestic gateway thereby connects Ahmedabad through airways. Railway tracks connect Ahmedabad to the towns in Gujarat and various Indian cities thereby making it easily accessible through railways. The Ahmedabad Railway Station is also called the Kalupur Railway Station. Other important stations in Ahmedabad are Maninagar, Gandhigram, Vatva, Asarva, Kali gam, Vastrapur, Chandlodia, Sabarmati, Naroda, Aamli, Sarkhej etc.

National Highway 8, National Highway 8C, National Expressway 1, connects Ahmedabad by road to different cities in India. The bus service in the city is looked after by the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS).
